Climate Justice Caravan and The Rights of Nature
As the effects of climate change are being felt all around the world, people are rising up to demonstrate a need for large-scale system and political change.
This April, just as communities in Portugal, Turkey, and Mexico have done, we are taking to the road for Climate Justice.
“We're delighted to be doing our caravan at the same time as our friends in Ireland. Never in the history of social and political movements do we need international solidarity and responses than ever. In Portugal, the climate crisis has rendered our rural areas a vulnerable and dangerous place to live in - The climate crisis isn't just tomorrow, its already here.”- João Camargo, Portuguese climate researcher and activist.
Along the nine-day journey, we will be visiting locations linked to issues such as data centers, mining and extractivism, seed sovereignty, water pollution and flooding, renewable energy and energy sovereignty, loss and damage, circular economy, just transition, and fossil fuels.
If you would like to learn more about our journey and why we are visiting these locations, please see our press kit and press release:
If you are thinking of traveling with us, please read out ‘What to Bring’ guide beforehand.
Climate Justice is a social and political demand that advocates for the redistribution of power, knowledge, and wellbeing as a means for, and end in, avoiding climate collapse. It proposes a new notion of prosperity within natural limits and just resource distribution, advocating for a true connection between traditional and western knowledge systems.
To truly achieve Climate Justice we need many changes, but among these Climate Justice requires:
The recognition of the interdependence between all species and the affirmation of the need to reduce, with an aim to eliminate, the production of greenhouse gasses and associated local pollutants.
That the economy should be embedded under the rules of the environment , and not the other way around, defending democratic planning based on real needs, replacing oppression, imposition, and appropriation for cooperation, solidarity, and mutual aid.
Consequently, we are using the Climate Justice Caravan to advocate that the River Shannon be given rights as part of the Rights of Nature movement.
