PRINCIPLES & VALUES

  1. WE HAVE A SHARED VISION OF CHANGE

In order to create a world that is fit for generations to come, it will be necessary to dismantle the systems of oppression that are exploiting people and the planet. We envision a future where people care for each other and the ecosystems we depend on.

  2. WE RECOGNISE THAT GLOBAL JUSTICE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF CLIMATE MITIGATION

Those least responsible are at the most risk. Rising emissions, over-consumption and increasing pollution did not happen in a vacuum. We cannot separate the current climate emergency from its roots in colonialism, racism, patriarchy, and capitalism.

  3. WE SET OUR MISSION ON WHAT IS NECESSARY

Mobilising 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as “Momentum-driven organising” to achieve this.

  4. WE NEED REGENERATIVE CULTURES

Creating cultures which are healthy, resilient and adaptable.

  5. WE OPENLY CHALLENGE OURSELVES AND THIS TOXIC SYSTEM

Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.

  6. WE VALUE REFLECTING AND LEARNING

Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.

  7. WE WELCOME EVERYONE AND EVERY PART OF EVERYONE

We welcome people of all ages, ethnicities and cultures, classes, genders, sexual orientations, nationalities, abilities, and neurotypes. We work actively to create safer and more accessible spaces, which means we do not tolerate racist, transphobic or other discriminatory behaviour.

  8. WE ACTIVELY MITIGATE FOR POWER

Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.

  9. WE AVOID BLAMING AND SHAMING THE PUBLIC

We were raised in a toxic system, no one individual is to blame. This does not preclude us from critiquing those in positions of power who use their influence to hinder climate justice.

  10. WE ARE A NON-VIOLENT NETWORK

Using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.

  11. WE ARE BASED ON AUTONOMY AND DECENTRALISATION

We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.
