Join the resistance to LNG. We can and must stop this dirty, climate-wrecking fossil fuel getting a foothold in Ireland. LNG is a path to climate chaos - floods, wildfires, societial collapse. We must disrupt the system that’s trying to bring LNG here. We simply cannot allow any LNG import terminals to be built under our watch. Whether we’re told by our Government that they’ll operate as commercial or "emergency-only” facilities, they are all using the same, climate-wrecking product that leads us further down the road to climate chaos.
how to resist lng:
Contact your TDs and senators - especially those in Government - and let them know you are dead against LNG in any form! See https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/ for their contact info.
Come to Climate Camp - 7-9th August in west Clare.
Get involved in direct action with us in XR Ireland. Register here for our next online orientation, Tue 14th July, 7pm
Tell your friends and get together to take action with them! Form a group! Brainstorm, use your imagination, get creative and have fun with it. Taking action is especially important if you live in Clare or Kerry - the counties where the terminals are planned!
LNG - THE BASICS:
LNG stands for Liquefied “Natural” Gas and the gas used in LNG is mainly sourced through fracking - a process which was banned in Ireland in 2017!
The reason for liquefying the gas, is so it can be shipped across oceans in massive tankers to destinations where it commands the highest price. At the destination it gets re-gasified at an import terminal to be fed into a gas grid.
LNG is climate-wrecking. It’s worse for the climate than coal even.
Why is LNG worse for the climate than “Natural” Gas? It’s because of the extra energy it takes to turn it from gas into liquid, the transport fuel to ship it to its destination, and because it leaks methane (a potent greenhouse gas) all throughout its lifecycle.
THE THREAT OF LNG COMING TO IRELAND
The Irish Govt is caving to pressure from Trump to buy US LNG. In March he told the Taoiseach, “I’m hopeful that we’ll soon reach a deal to sell American liquefied natural gas – and that’ll bring down your deficit a lot – so I think you have to make this deal with us, you better do something.”
There are currently two import terminals being actively planned for Ireland, both on the Shannon estuary.
The first is planned for Tarbert, Co Kerry by a company called Shannon LNG Ltd which is owned by American company with a bad reputation - New Fortress Energy. A decision on this application is due from An Coimisiún Pleanála.
The second one is being planned by our own Government in the name of “energy security”. This one is planned for Cahiracon, Co Clare and the legislation to make it happen is being rammed through!
There is no energy security with LNG. It worsens climate security which worsens energy security. Also, LNG is highly vulnerable to geopolitical unrest - demonstrated this year when the US attack on Iran resulted in the Strait of Hormuz being closed.
Combined measures including demand reduction (NO MORE DATA CENTRES), demand management, battery storage and new electricity measures like interconnectors is what guarantees a safe, secure energy future for Ireland.
